Yesterday I was photographing the wedding of Lisa and Kevin at Derwent Manor in Northumberland and I finally worked out what had been nagging at me for a while.

I have noticed that something has changed with weddings since I started doing them 7 years ago. The parents of the happy couple are starting to not look like parents... they are starting to look like my friends.

Parents at weddings were always easy for me to spot because they were the older people in suits etc. However, more and more these days I am approaching people with a hand shake saying 'hi you must be the best man' to be corrected and told they are the father of the groom.

Today we celebrate my son's 13th birthday and I have realised that the parents are not getting younger.... I am getting older !!!

How did this happen so suddenly!! How long before couple start saying 'yeah we got this great photographer, an old guy from the North East'!

Cyprus is my regular commute these days (yes I am aware my carbon footprint is not great) although it's always so much more fun when I can take the family with me. Destination Weddings are without doubt my favourite shoots but they are not all fun, there are times when it can be quite lonely and daunting being so many thousands of miles away from home. Your wedding day, surely a day to share with all your friends and family... even if you haven’t seen some of them since you were 7?

What sort of selfish person jets off to warmer climbs for their wedding day? Well people like me, I got married in Paphos, Cyprus over ten years ago (notice the vagueness of that statement - I dare not be too precise in case Mrs Beck has to correct me). Seriously, planning a wedding can be a stressful affair with lots of things to consider. In this green and pleasant land, one of the main concerns, no matter what time of year you book your wedding is the glorious British weather. So if you dream of saying I do in the warmth of the sun's rays, next to the deep blue warm waters of your tropical resort then a destination wedding could be the perfect option.

I consider myself a photographer with boundaries and will cover weddings anywhere from Chester Le Street to the Caribbean. I love destination weddings and my favourite locations are in Malta, Cyprus and the TRNC.

There are lots of benefits to destination weddings and for us when we got married one of the most important aspects was that of the guest list. We desperately wanted to share our day only with the close family and friends who are special to us, we had no interest in keep distant relatives happy and playing the whole family politics game. When you get married abroad the one thing you can be sure of is that every guest that turns up really thinks a lot of you – they travelled half way around the world to share the most important day in your life with you.

Cyprus is known as the island of love and is the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite. Of all the locations around the world that I work Cyprus is without doubt my favourite. Cyprus is my second home and I know it better than any other destination in the world. The variety available for your wedding is vast from the greenery and mountains of the North to the luxury of resorts like Aphrodite Hills to the cheap and cheerful hotels of Ayia Napa.

The Legalities of getting married in Cyprus

Rest assured that it is not a problem for UK citizens to marry in Cyprus and that the marriage will be perfectly legal in the UK. However, according to Cyprus law, before the marriage can proceed you must meet the following legal requirements:

• Be resident for a minimum of three working days (excluding weekends, public holidays and the day of arrival) before the wedding day. It is not now compulsory to have to stay a minimum of two weeks but for your enjoyment, it is highly recomended.

• Have valid ten-year passports not due to expire within six months, plus photocopies of all pages relating to the personal information contained therein.

• Each have your own Single Status Statutory Declaration confirming that you are free to get married. These must include your name, address, nationality, religion, passport number and occupation; state whether single, divorced or widowed; that you intend to marry in Cyprus; and be signed and stamped by a UK solicitor, stating ‘solicitor’ on the document. Scottish nationals should obtain a Certificate of No Impediment from the local registry office in place of the Declaration.

• Have a copy of the decree absolute if divorced and, if Catholic, a copy of the marriage enulment.

• Have a copy of the death certificate if widowed.

• Proof of parental consent if under 18, stamped and signed by a solicitor.

• Proof of name change by Deed Poll, stamped and signed by a solicitor.

• Birth certificates.

• Adoption certificates if adopted.

To ensure the success of every wedding and the happiness of every bride and groom, your wedding planner will require photocopies of all relevant documents at least six weeks before your arrival.

The very next day I was privilaged to cover the wedding of Natasha and Adam Jones. As Adam plays Rugby Union for his country (Wales) it made for an interesting array of very tall, very big guests. Adam himself is over 6' 7'' and his new wife only 5' 2'' but even Adam was dwarfed by some of the guests.

Finding a professional wedding photographer in County Durham

A quick search of the internet will reveal an unending array of wedding photographers. Type the search term 'wedding photographers' into Google and you will be presented with 985,000 photographers in the UK alone. When you consider that last year there were only 288,000 weddings there appears to be an obvious anomaly. Even if we narrow the search to Durham Wedding Photographers we are still left with 137,000 photographer links. How on earth can a bride make the right decision and find the perfect wedding photographer for her wedding in the North East?

Lets start with the reason there are so many people who fancy their hand at being a wedding photographer. Everyone has been to a wedding and watched the wedding photographer having fun taking pictures of the happy couple and thought what a great job. A few people have also thought I could do that and before they know what is happening they are on their way down to Curry's to buy a digital SLR camera. No sooner as the camera is out of the box, without any training or experience they publicly declare themselves to be a wedding photographer.

Over 80% of wedding photographers are simply amateurs trying their hand. Assuming there are a thousand people in the North East who claim to be a wedding photographer, 800 can be discounted instantly. Of the remaining only 5% are award winning or qualified to a professional level and registered with a trade organisation such as the SWPP (society of wedding and portrait photographers) which gives you 10 photographers in the whole North East who a capable of creating something you would call wedding photography of distinction. Creative, artistic and unique images that really make a beautiful statement about the most special day of your life. Price: A crude but effective way to tell if the photographer is dedicated to his art or if he works in B&Q during the week and takes snaps at the weekend to make money. Truly great wedding photography is like an ice berg, you only see 20% of the work. For every hour of the wedding there are many, many hours spent in post production for the professional wedding photographer. This attention to detail is reflected in the price, if you are considering a wedding photographer and his very best package in under £1500 chances are he is an amateur.

Availability: Full time professional wedding photographers can cover a wedding anywhere, any day, any time. Amateur 'photographers' have 9-5 jobs and must fit their hobby in around their day job.

Examples: Ask to see examples of their past work. Ensure they show you a full wedding album taken at one wedding and not a collection of single shots. You can also ask to visit the photographer to see his work, if they refuse it's normally because their 'studio' is the back bedroom. A professional photographer will be proud of his studio and happy to show you example of his/her work there.

Selecting the perfect County Durham wedding photographer for your own special wedding day, should start with compiling a shortlist of potential candidates, then go and chat to them in person.
